Air conditioning, heating and cooling
Our split systems start at $1,618 for a Haier 2.5 kW on a standard back-to-back install, including GST and with no rebate (split system prices). Three or four rooms can share one outdoor unit on a 12 kW multi-split (Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu or Panasonic, 3 to 4 indoor heads), about $10,000 to $11,000 installed, which leaves one outdoor unit to place instead of several.
We fit Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Haier, Rinnai, Carrier and Midea. Already bought a unit yourself? Ask us first: we generally don't fit customer-supplied air conditioners, because nobody is clearly responsible if one goes wrong. Online calculators, including our sizing calculator, are only a guide: the Victorian Government recommends that installers visit your home to check what size is right.
On a heritage property. Bayside's Heritage Overlay lists 38 places with a Hampton address. On a Heritage Overlay property, an air conditioner visible from a street (other than a lane) or a public park needs a planning permit, so we check the overlay before we quote and plan where the outdoor unit can sit.
Close to the beach. Near the foreshore and along Beach Road, it is worth knowing that Mitsubishi Electric's installation manual names a "salty environment as seaside areas" among the places where "air conditioner trouble is liable to occur". Salt wears outdoor units faster, so ask us if you want a specially protected model.
Still on ducted gas heating? Replacing it with ducted reverse cycle can earn a Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) discount of up to $5,530. You pay a minimum share yourself, per product, including GST: from $200 for a single-split under 10 kW up to $3,000 for a ducted system of any capacity or a multi-split of 10 kW or more (VEU co-payments explained). Arrange it through an accredited provider before any work starts, because VEU says retrospective discounts are typically not possible; we include it in your written quote.
When we quote, we also check whether your switchboard needs an upgrade for the new system. Our air conditioning work comes with a 5-year workmanship warranty, separate from the manufacturer's.
Switchboards and safety switches in older houses
At the 2021 Census, 3,078 of Hampton's occupied homes (62.0%) were separate houses. Bayside City Council's Hampton Urban Forest Precinct Plan (2024) describes "a prominent display of federation and interwar dwellings" along and near the foreshore, a central area known for its "California Bungalow style dwellings", typically single-storey weatherboard, and an eastern precinct that "contains post war dwellings".
Houses of every one of those eras were wired before safety switches were required. Power circuits in new wiring needed one from the early 1990s and lighting from 2001, so a house may still have no RCD protection unless it has been upgraded (safety switch rules in full).
Buying an older house? Energy Safe Victoria says: "When buying a home built before the 1980s it is imperative the wiring is checked by a licensed electrical inspector or registered electrical contractor prior to moving in." We can do that check and quote any rewiring it shows.
Ducted heating, a car charger and an induction cooktop each add load to an old fuse box. Before adding any of them we check the board, and a switchboard upgrade is quoted alongside the work that needs it (electrifying a home).
Everyday electrical work
The day-to-day jobs we take on include finding out why the power keeps tripping, adding power points to a kitchen or study, new LED lighting inside and out, hard-wired smoke alarms, ceiling fans and connecting a new oven or induction cooktop. More on our residential electrical work.
On security jobs our part is the electrical work only: power for CCTV cameras, alarm panels, intercoms and gate motors, and security lighting.
New townhouses and EV chargers
Hampton's share of townhouses is well above Victoria's: at the 2021 Census, 1,129 homes (22.7%, against 13.9% across Victoria) were semi-detached, row or terrace houses or townhouses, and 704 (14.2%) were flats or apartments.
From 1 January 2027 a building permit generally cannot be issued for a new home with a reticulated gas connection, so unless it uses LPG, a rebuild needs a switchboard sized for electric hot water, heating and cooking, and that is the time to plan the car charger circuit too.
Supplied and installed, a Tesla Wall Connector is about $2,400 and a SiGENERGY EV charger about $2,800 with up to 15 m of cable, and a typical home install takes one day. In Victoria the job must go through a registered electrical contractor: its licensed electrician does the work and issues the Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Townhouse or unit? If the charger, its cabling or its supply involves common property, which the plan of subdivision defines, the owners corporation must approve the work first. On United Energy's network we register your charger on myEnergy for you, and you get our 12-month workmanship warranty on the installation. More on EV charger types.
Solar, batteries and heritage permits
All 38 Hampton places on Bayside's Heritage Overlay schedule, including the Castlefield, Orlando Street and Hampton Street precincts, have solar controls. There, solar panels visible from a street (other than a lane) or public park need a planning permit; on any Heritage Overlay place, so does an EV charger visible the same way. Away from the overlay, clause 62.02-2 of Victoria's planning rules means rooftop solar that mainly powers your home needs no planning permit, unless another control specifically requires one.
Adding a battery to the solar already on your roof? The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program takes around 30% off the upfront cost, normally as a discount at the point of sale. The rate drops every six months from 1 January 2027, and you get the rate in force when your Certificate of Electrical Safety is issued. There is no Victorian battery rebate, and eligibility depends on the battery and the set-up, so we confirm it before we quote (battery rebate guide).
We are a SiGENERGY Certified Installer, Tesla Powerwall Certified Installer and Sonnen Certified Partner for home batteries, and install solar from 5 kW to 30 kW. A single-phase home on United Energy's network can export up to 5 kW, with the limit for each address set at United Energy's pre-approval. Solar and battery jobs come with our 10-year workmanship warranty, which runs from the commissioning date on the Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Heat pump hot water and the March 2027 gas rule
From 1 March 2027, when a mains gas water heater in an existing home breaks and cannot be repaired, or needs to be replaced for any other reason, the new one must be electric. A working gas water heater can stay, and gas appliances already in place can still be used, maintained and repaired (Victoria's gas rules).
Our heat pump hot water systems come from iStore, Sanden, Emerald and Haier; an iStore 270L straight swap is about $3,900 installed, including GST, before rebates. Our licensed plumber caps the gas and disconnects the old heater, and we take it away. Two incentives can cut that price: the VEU discount, which we apply on our installations (up to $560 when a heat pump replaces gas), and, for eligible households, Solar Victoria's hot water rebate of up to $1,000, or up to $1,400 for an eligible locally made product.
Rental safety checks for rental providers
At the 2021 Census, 1,126 Hampton homes (22.7%) were rented, against 28.5% across Victoria. The rental provider (landlord) must arrange the two-yearly gas and electrical safety check. We do the electrical half and leave a written report; any gas appliances are checked by a licensed or registered gasfitter (rental check dates).
Who does your job, and what we hold
Your job is done by our own electricians, usually Fedya or Rhys; we don't subcontract it. Our workmanship warranties carry over to a new owner if you sell the property. More about our electricians.

Questions people ask us
Do you take emergency calls?
We are open Monday to Friday 8:00am–6:00pm and Saturday 8:00am–1:00pm. We do not advertise round-the-clock callouts. For an urgent electrical fault, call 1300 201 358 and we will confirm availability directly.
How much does an electrician cost?
A service call is $165 for the first 30 minutes of one electrician, and more work is priced and agreed with you first.
Do I need a permit for an air conditioner in Hampton?
On a Heritage Overlay property, yes, if the unit can be seen from a street (other than a lane) or a public park (clause 43.01-1). Under clause 43.01-4, that application is exempt from the usual notice and review requirements.
Who do I call when the power goes out?
Ring the distributor, not an electrician: Hampton is on United Energy’s network, and its faults number is 13 20 99.
