Everyday electrical work across Sandringham 3191

The small jobs we do here include a circuit that trips, a dead power point, extra outlets for a kitchen or study, LED downlights, outdoor and garden lighting, ceiling fans, an oven or induction cooktop to connect, and smoke alarms. We also do safety switch upgrades, safety inspections and partial or full rewiring. The full list is on our residential electrical page.

The $165 service call covers the first 30 minutes of one electrician on site; if the job needs longer, you get the price before we keep going.

For alarms, CCTV and intercoms we do the electrical side only, the circuits and power they run on; our security page explains where our part stops. Shops in Sandringham Village are covered on our commercial electrical page.

Switchboard and safety switch upgrades for Sandringham bungalows

A switchboard upgrade in a home typically costs $1,250 to $2,500 including GST. If your fuses keep blowing, or a circuit trips whenever the kettle and the heater run together, the board is usually the reason.

Bayside City Council's Neighbourhood Character Review (2004) puts Keats Street and McLauchlin Avenue in Precinct E3, which it describes as mostly timber Californian Bungalows. A house of that era may have been rewired since, or may not. The switchboard tells us which, and it is the first thing we open.

Those bungalows were wired decades before safety switches (RCDs) were required. In Victoria the rule came in for power circuits in new homes in the early 1990s and was extended to power and lighting circuits from 2001; in both cases it reached an existing home only where significant electrical work was undertaken. A bungalow that has never had that work may still have no RCD at all.

Solar installers in Sandringham: what we check before quoting

The Clean Energy Regulator has recorded 1,027 small-scale solar systems in postcode 3191 since 2001, about 7.0 MW of capacity, data to 31 August 2026.

The home systems we install range from 5 kW to 30 kW; more on solar panel installation. Panels come from LONGi, Trina Solar and Jinko Solar, with SiGENERGY, Fronius or Sungrow inverters. Before we quote we check three things:

  • The network's export limit. Sandringham is on United Energy's network, where a single-phase home can export up to 5 kW, with the limit for each address set at United Energy's pre-approval. If that comes back at 0 kW, its flexible exports (launched 1 July 2026) let a compatible inverter export most of the time instead. We check it before we quote.
  • Heritage. Some homes in a Heritage Overlay need a planning permit for solar (see the questions below).
  • The switchboard. An old board with no spare space or no safety switches is cheaper to sort out at the same visit.

Every solar and battery job carries our workmanship warranty of 10 years, on top of the manufacturers' warranties.

Adding a battery to existing solar in Sandringham

From July 2025 to August 2026 the Clean Energy Regulator recorded at least 133 home batteries in postcode 3191, and only 72 new solar systems over the same months. Those batteries hold about 3,158 kWh of usable storage, about 24 kWh each on average, well past the 14 kWh point where the federal discount starts to taper. Batteries outnumbered new solar systems almost two to one, which suggests many were added to existing systems.

During the August 2024 wild winds, United Energy named Sandringham among its hardest-hit areas, so tell us if backup power matters.

Adding a battery to a system you already own raises two questions a new install does not:

  • The inverter. The battery has to be on the approved battery list, and the inverter it connects to must be able to join a virtual power plant. If that is your existing hybrid inverter, it must be on the approved inverter list, now or when it was commissioned.
  • The switchboard. A battery adds a circuit, so the board needs room for it.

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program is aimed at around a 30% discount on the upfront cost. The rate that applies is the one in force on the date your Certificate of Electrical Safety is issued, and it steps down every 1 January and 1 July. Our battery rebate guide has the current figures.

There is no Victorian battery rebate, and Solar Victoria no longer takes applications for battery loans. We install SigenStor, Tesla Powerwall and Sonnen; more on our solar battery page.

EV chargers for garages and shared car parks

At the 2021 Census, 1,643 Sandringham dwellings (38.6%) had two registered motor vehicles and 577 (13.6%) had three or more.

If the charger, its cabling or its supply touches common property (the plan of subdivision decides), the owners corporation must approve the work. Our EV charger installation page covers prices, charging speeds, owners corporation approval and the brands we install.

Units, townhouses and owners corporations

The 2021 Census counted 4,266 occupied private dwellings in Sandringham. Exactly half were separate houses (50.0%, against 73.4% across Victoria), 956 were townhouse-type homes and 1,145 were flats or apartments (26.8%, more than double the state's 12.1%).

That split decides the job. In a house the owner controls the roof, the meter box and the driveway. In a flat or many townhouses, the roof, the car park and the main switchboard are often common property (the plan of subdivision decides), and work on common property needs the owners corporation's approval first. Inside your own unit, a new circuit, a tripping safety switch, lighting or a split system is ours to do.

Units without a usable roof may still use the Victorian Midday Power Saver: with a smart meter, once you sign up with your retailer, general (not controlled-load) power used from 11am to 2pm is free, up to 24 kWh a day, though other prices on that offer may be higher. On an apartment embedded network, the Victorian Government says you may be eligible if you have a smart meter and are billed by a licensed electricity retailer.

Heat pump hot water

From 1 March 2027, a water heater on mains (reticulated) gas in an existing home cannot be replaced with another gas unit. Nothing has to be replaced before it fails, and repairs are still allowed. Our Victorian gas rules page lists the exemptions.

Sandringham is already switching: the Clean Energy Regulator recorded 79 heat pump water heaters in postcode 3191 in 2024 and 73 in 2025, up from 44 in 2023. The VEU discount is up to $560 when a heat pump replaces gas, and Solar Victoria's hot water rebate is up to $1,000, or $1,400 for an eligible locally made product, for eligible owner-occupiers. We install iStore, Sanden Eco Plus and Haier, and the iStore 270L heat pump is in our shop; more on our heat pump hot water page.

Air conditioning

A split system on a standard back-to-back install starts at $1,618 (Haier 2.5 kW, including GST), with no rebate involved. Where a system qualifies for VEU, the discount and the minimum co-payment depend on the system type and size; our VEU page lists them and our split system installation page has the rest.

Rental electrical safety checks

A quarter of Sandringham homes (25.3%) were rented at the 2021 Census. Since 13 October 2026, two-yearly gas and electrical safety checks have applied to all Victorian rental properties, not only agreements made since March 2021. We do the electrical check and give you the written report for your records.

Who does the work, and what we hold

How a job runs

  1. You call or send the form. We call you back within 2 business hours.
  2. A price on the phone where we can. Small jobs can often be priced from a description, or a photo emailed to team@helcro.com.au, at no charge.
  3. A $50 site assessment for bigger work. We look at the board, the roof or the route, then send the written quote.
  4. The work, by our own team. Usually Fedya or Rhys.
  5. Paperwork. A Certificate of Electrical Safety wherever the work requires one, and the warranty in writing.

Common questions

Do I need council approval for solar in Sandringham?

In most cases, no. A permit is only needed for a system attached to a building in a Heritage Overlay, where it can be seen from a street (other than a lane) or a public park and the overlay’s schedule switches on solar controls for that place. We check before we quote.

No. The battery discount is federal, through the Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

Not always. We look at the board at the site assessment and tell you if it needs work.
